Topper Headon: drummer voor The Who?

In The Independent On Sunday staat een interview met Topper Headon, de voormalige drummer van The Clash. In het interview wordt gemeld dat Headon dankzij zijn vriendschap met Pete bijna drummer van The Who geworden was.

"His friendship with Pete Townshend nearly landed him the job of drumming for The Who. At the time, The Clash were supporting the British supergroup at Shea Stadium and Headon admits he would have relished playing for the headlining band, lording it over The Clash. But if drumming for The Who was ever really a possibility, Headon scuppered it in characteristic style. In full stage gear he climbed a 25ft drainpipe, ran across a roof and jumped off the other side, waking up in hospital with a broken leg and a policeman, who charged him with attempted burglary. "In a bright red suit?" he inquired".

Flaming Lips-zanger over Pete

In een interview op Spinner praat Flaming Lips-zanger Wayne Coyne over Pete.

"We go to our dressing room, and there’s Pete Townshend simply walking around. I go up to him and go, "Hey, Pete, we’re doing this radio show with you in a couple of hours." He goes, "I know, Wayne, it’s great to meet you." We talk about music … and he’s charming, nice and nice to people around him. I thought, "Gee, if anybody deserves to have the armored limousines, it would be someone like Pete Townshend"", aldus Coyne.
"When you’re around people like Eddie Vedder and Pete Townshend, you see they’re not insecure, they find it very easy to be a normal person".

Michael Jackson en Pete

PeteMichael Jackson is overleden. Dit nieuws zal niet meer als een verrassing uit de lucht komen vallen. Pete was liefhebber van de muziek van Jackson. Toen Jackson in 2005 verzeild was geraakt in rechtzaken, nam Pete het voor hem op.

"He has unselfishly helped every cause, and individual child, I have sent his way. In one case he hired a circus for the Down’s Syndrome children of a special school of the daughter of a friend of mine, and showed up to happily, and – yes – in childlike enthusiasm – watch the show with them. (..) His feathers may be badly burned, and he may be damaged in other ways too, but he is something of an angel." (Rockradio / Rolling Stone)

In 2007 vertelde Pete’s dochter Emma in een interview voor The Independent dat Pete 3 exemplaren had gekocht van Off The Wall:

"He came back from Tower Records with 11 boxes of records. In the boxes, there were no less than three copies of "Off the Wall", Michael Jackson’s first solo album. Exactly why did you buy three, I asked him? "Well, it was so good! I just kept thinking I had to be sure to pick up a copy, and I was in a rush, I couldn’t remember what I had already got, but I thought, well if I get more than one, I can give it to people as a gift."

"Dankzij Entwistle niet naar Vietnam"

DJ Mike Olszewski meldt op CleveScene dat hij dankzij John Entwistle niet naar de oorlog in Vietnam gestuurd werd. Olszewski liep gehoorschade op tijdens een Who concert in 1971 en zakte daardoor voor selectietesten.

"On August 12, 1971 I sat in the second row in front of the bass amplifier at the Who’s Public Hall show. No ear plugs. The effect was immediate. I was affected by tinitis, a chronic whistling or whining sound and a hearing loss. Fortunately, it helped me stay out of Vietnam after failing the hearing test for the draft physical three times in 1973! I always swore I would thank John Entwistle, and when I met him for the first time in 1992, he seemed shaken that he caused my hearing loss. I explained to him that it probably saved my life! I still have hearing problems. Despite the fact it kept me out of Vietnam, I definitely would have taken steps to protect myself.", aldus Olszewski.
