"Can't Explain" – 4 DVD set

We were too rough at the edges to be a pop group.’ Roger Daltrey

This is the true story of The Who tracing their rise from humble West London roots through to international superstardom. Featuring a masterful and comprehensive text packed with great photographs of the band, this unique production also includes four documentary DVDs packed with candid audio interviews with band members compared and contrasted with the views of a leading team of music journalists, insiders and musicologists.

This uncensored and independent title has not been viewed or approved by the band or its management and is completely free to tell the unvarnished story of The Who as it really happened.

The contents of this amazing book and DVD combination are completely essential reading and viewing for Who fans everywhere

Kijk bijvoorbeeld naar The Who Under Review (hier).

"The Who's Tommy" opgevoerd in Pittsfield

Tommy
The Who's Tommy

"What does seem fitting, given how well this production captures the spirit of their historic album, is that the last image we see is of the Who".

"Super Edition" van "Quadrophenia" in oktober

Het lijkt er toch van te komen, de Special Edition van Quadrophenia. Op zijn blog op de officixc3xable site schrijft Pete dat hij momenteel bezig is voorbereiden van een heruitgave van de rockopera. De releasedatum zou ergens in oktober moeten zijn. Hij is bezig met het schrijven van liner notes en het doorspitten van zijn oude demo's. De uitgave zal namelijk "some real quirky tracks that didn't make it onto the final album" bevatten.

"You are going to love it", schrijft Pete, "because I am missing this summer sunshine to get it completed on time".

Verslag boekpromotie Richie Unterberger

WGFA Afgelopen week vonden enkele promotionele activiteiten plaats rond het boek Won't Get Fooled Again: The Who From Lifehouse To Quadrophenia, geschreven door Richie Unterberger.

"The Wednesday night event at San Francisco's Ninth Street Independent Film Center took place in a room that could accomodate 40-50 people. It was full. Unterberger briefly plugged his book before starting a two hour program of Who videos.  No handouts were distributed.  No commentary was made during the program. The vids were sequenced more or less in chronological order and covered the period '64 to '74.  Basically, the Railway Hotel to Charlton Football Club. Unofficially released portions from Richmond Jazz Festival (Shindig), Ready Steady Go, A Whole Scene Going, Popside, Beat Club and the Marquee Club. Also French TV '66, some promo films, early interviews and other concert footage. People were applauding after each of the songs.  Of the members in the band, Keith Moon garnered the most reactions.  Mostly laughter.  But, big, warm applause after "Bell Boy" from Charlton '74.

Thursday night's event took place at the public library in El Cerrito.  I was one of a dozen people there.  Unterberger's talk was accompanied a few audio-visuals, including some music by Terry Riley. I recorded many of Unterberger's comments on Lifehouse and Quadrophenia.  I'll share one:

"You might be wondering why didn't I ask Pete Townshend about some of this stuff. I approached him for an interview three times. Got no response twice. And, then the third time, he gave a very flippant one paragraph 'No'. A very bittersweet coda to that is that — I hope this doesn't sound immodest — last week I got an email from Pete Townshend. I know it was him because his assistant called the publisher that morning to get my email address. And, it was very brief, but he said, 'I'm impressed by the book. I'm gonna recommend it to people for years to come as the most accurate source of information for that period.'  And, I was, I felt very pleased. And, I also felt, 'Why didn't you talk to me when you could have?'  So if there's ever a chance to do a revised edition, he did say, 'If there's ever an opportunity for us to meet, you know, let me know.'  But, it's not going to be easy to get a second edition into print. But, if that happens and he's still around, I'd like to do that."

"To Be Someone" – een vervolg op Quadrophenia

"An early version of the book was sent to Eel Pie publishing and Pete Townshend had given Mr. Meadows his permission to publish a book with a few provisoxe2x80x99s thrown in to base the story on Jimmy from his 1973 album Quadrophenia, and I beg the questionxe2x80xa6 is this the long awaited sequel? I donxe2x80x99t know if it is, what Jimmy are we looking at here? I mean, there was four of them, right?", valt te lezen.

Het boek is o.a. hier te bestellen.
