"Real Good Looking Boy" met John

Een fan meldt dat The Who in 2002 een opname heeft gemaakt van "Real Good Looking Boy", met John op basgitaar. Hij sprak met Pete tijdens de "Meet en Greet" in Chicago en bracht dit onderwerp ter sprake. Het betrof hier een ‘echte’ studio-opname, dus geen opname gemaakt tijdens repetities voor de tour. De band zelf, maar ook JBL Productions hebben opnames gemaakt van de laatste repetities met John. Om de een of andere reden heeft Roger zijn veto uitgesproken en werden de beelden niet uitgebracht.

Artikel over "My Generation" en Moon film

In de Sunday Times van vandaag schrijft Charles Shaar Murray over "My Generation".

In de New York Times staat vandaag een update over de film over Keith Moon: 

"In agreeing to star as Keith Moon, though, he cannot hope to have as intimate a knowledge of his subject as one of that projectxe2x80x99s producers, Roger Daltrey, the Whoxe2x80x99s lead singer. xe2x80x9cRogerxe2x80x99s dream has always been to have Mike do the role,xe2x80x9d said Nigel Sinclair, a partner in Mr. Daltreyxe2x80x99s Spitfire Pictures production company and a co-producer on the untitled film. xe2x80x9cHe saw Mike as the creative force for pulling the project together, with help from us.xe2x80x9d

Mr. Myersxe2x80x99s unconventional choice as screenwriter was the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Donald Margulies. xe2x80x9cHe said, xe2x80x98I love your work,xe2x80x99 xe2x80x9d

Last summer Mr. Margulies delivered a first draft of the script about the years leading up Mr. Moonxe2x80x99s death in 1978, a project he describes as an xe2x80x9cantibiopic.xe2x80x9d Hexe2x80x99s now working on a third draft. xe2x80x9cThe task that Ixe2x80x99ve enjoyed is not only to do Keith Moon on screen xe2x80″ someone who has become a rock xe2x80x99nxe2x80x99 roll icon xe2x80″ but to use Mike as a conduit towards making that person real,xe2x80x9d Mr. Margulies said.

At 43 Mr. Myers is already 11 years older than Mr. Moon was when he died, but Mr. Sinclair, the producer, said he wasnxe2x80x99t worried, in part because of the damage that Mr. Moonxe2x80x99s longtime drug and alcohol abuse inflicted on his face and body. xe2x80x9cMike looks very young for his age,xe2x80x9d Mr. Sinclair said, xe2x80x9cand of course Keith, when he was 32, he looked much older for his age.xe2x80x9d

Who bij de "topconcerten van 2006"

Veel kranten en tijdschriften kijken in deze tijd van het jaar terug. Ook de muziekpers laat zich niet onbetuigd. Bij media die een overzicht hebben van de top concerten van 2006 staat The Who steevast in de lijst. Bijvoorbeeld:

"The Who and The Pretenders, Schottenstein Center. The Who had an off night. Roger Daltrey croaked through his set with a bad case of bronchitis. But as he said when he addressed the crowd, "It was either we cancel the show or we play. But it doesn’t fucking matter. It’s Rock & Roll, right?" True, indeed. That’s why The Who are legends. Sean Lennon over "In The Attic"

The Village Voice kijkt met artiesten terug op hun hoogtepunten van 2006.

"Sean Lennon’s milestone for the year came at a gig-playing "In the Attic" at Joe’s Pub with Pete Townshend and Rachel Fuller. "I never thought I’d be onstage playing one of my songs with Pete on guitar," he says. "At the end, everybody sang ‘I Am One’ by the Who. I sang the first chorus and was  terrified that Roger Daltrey was watching. It turned out to be the most fun I’ve had all year. I have Pete and Rachel to thank for it."

Album van "In The Attic" opnames

Rachel heeft groot nieuws. "I was going to say that I shaved my head, I’mpregnant with sextuplets, my record has just sold a million and Peteand I got married last night in a bikini – well, he wore a bikini".
Er komt een album uit van opnames die gemaakt zijn tijdens "In The Attic". Het album zal vanaf 14 februari te downloaden zijn via iTunes.

De artiesten op het album zijn: The Kooks, Ed Harcourt, Martha Wainwright, The Editors, The Raconteurs, The Flaming Lips, Death Cab For Cutie, The Zutons, Regina Spektor, Razorlight, The Fratellis, Foy Vance, Rose Hill Drive en natuurlijk Rachel, Mikey Cuthbert, Simon en Pete.

Simon Townshend op Sundance Film Festival

Simon Townshend zal optreden tijdens het Sundance Film Festival in Park City in Utah. Het festival duurt van 18 t/m 28 januari. Naast Townshend zullen ook Donovan, Ron Sexsmith en Terence Blanchard optreden. Tijdens dit festival worden concerten en ronde tafel discussies met regisseurs gehouden, met onder andere Justin Theroux ("Dedication"), Mike Chaill ("King of California") en Andrew Wagner ("Starting Out In The Evening").

In het bijbehorende Music Cafxc3xa9  zal Simon gaan optreden.

Pete: "New Who album with a live sound?"

Vorige week gaf Pete een interview voor een Amerikaans radiostation, waarin hij praatte over "Endless Wire". Hij vertelt o.a. dat hij Elton John en Eric Clapton om raad gevraagd had wat te doen met "Endless Wire". Zij gaven hem het advies om veel zxc3xa9lf te doen en pas later de band er aan toe te voegen. Pete is nu zelf tevreden met het album, alhoewel hij graag nog wat langer aan sommige dingen had willen sleutelen.

Hij zei ook dat hij met Roger en Zak gepraat heeft over de mogelijkheid om nog een Who album te maken dat klinkt zoals de band momenteel live klinkt.

Geen complete concerten op nieuwe Who DVD-set

Co-producer Paul Crowder heeft op de website van "Who’s Still Who" een update gegeven over de film. Zoals het er nu naar uit ziet zullen er geen complete concerten op de DVD-set verschijnen. Was er eerder sprake over het volledige concert in het Colisseum in Londen (1969) en dat in Kilburn State (1977), nu schrijft Crowder dat er selecties van deze twee concerten op de DVD-set verschijnen.

De set zal in feite uit 3 films bestaan. De eerste is een uitgebreide documentaire over The Who, van het prille begin tot nu. De belangrijkste momenten uit de Who geschiedenis komen voorbij, gelardeerd met interviews met betrokken en stukjes (ja, stukjes) live-beelden. "We will rarely, if at all, feature a complete performance of a song, at least not in Film One", aldus Crowder.

Film 2 richt zich meer in details op elk lid van de band, met livebeelden. Film 3 bevat selecties van de twee eerder genoemde concerten.

"While Ihave seen some of this footage before at different times, I have notseen it put into a larger context in this way, and there are somepictures and footage that have never been seen, nor knew existed. LeedsUni 1970 being one of them. Our aim is to tell the story not only for us fans, butfor everyone. If viewers have never heard of the band before, they willknow all about them by the end", aldus Crowder.

Een definitieve release-datum is niet gegeven.

"The Who Sell Out" – boekbespreking

Onlangs verscheen aan de hand van John Dougan het boek "The Who Sell Out". Dit boek verscheen in een serie getiteld "33 1/3".

Op Blogcritics is een recensie te lezen over dit boek. "Like the best books in this series, Dougan really shows why The Who Sell Out matters to him. While I’d quibble with him rating it above Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, his enthusiasm for this album rings through the pages".

Beeldmateriaal van Pete en de whammy bar (1989)

Op Youtube zijn heel veel leuke filmpjes te vinden die te maken hebben met The Who. In dit filmpje is onder andere het ongeluk te zien waarbij de whammy bar door Pete’s hand gaat. Ook beelden van Roger met Bobby Pridden op het podium en Pete met zijn haren los, tijdens dezelfde tour in 1989. Erg fout, maar goed.
