MSN.com heeft een artikel over rocksterren die eigenlijk met pensioen zouden moeten gaan. Naast lichtelijk vergeten bands als Styx, Foreigner en Yes, wordt ook The Who genoemd.

"I hope I die before I get old," sang Roger Daltrey in the classic 1965 hit, "My Generation." Who drummer Keith Moon and bassist John Entwistle are already dead and, while guitarist Pete Townshend still seems capable of writing credible material, The Who may no longer be the best vehicle to present it. The group will have a television audience in the tens of millions when it plays the Super Bowl half-time show on Feb. 7, and it would be great if it delivered a dynamite performance and then called it a day.

"Floss" en Zak de ijskast in? (update)

De moderator van het Goldhawk Club Forum heeft contact met Pete. Het citaat van Roger is blijkbaar al oud, en de laatste keer dat ze contact met Pete had, was hij nog gewoon aan Floss bezig. Hij richtte zich toen vooral op de muziek. Wat Zak betreft: het schijnt dat Pete hem had gevraagd om zich voor een langere tijd beschikbaar te stellen omdat hij nodig was voor studio-opnames, maar toen gebeurde er niks. Zak is momenteel aan het opnemen voor zijn eigen band en andere projecten.

RockRadio over Superbowl protesten

Nog steeds proberen actiegroepen in Amerika te voorkomen dat The Who op 7 februari tijdens de Superbowl speelt. Dat meldt RockRadio vandaag. Dit heeft te maken met de arrestatie van Pete in 2003.

Evin Daly, oprichter van Child Abuse Watch, schrijft aan de National Football League: "Inviting Townsend to play is a blatant disregard to the values of American families and a slap in the face to victims of child sexual abuse. . . I think there’s a chance the League would drop Pete and let the rest of the band perform. The Super Bowl is just not suitable for him".

Protect Our Children heeft inmiddels de douane en de immigratiedienst ingelicht en wil niet dat Townshend het land binnengelaten wordt. "We’re part of a coordinated effort to prevent Mr. Townsend from coming into this country. We acknowledge he was not convicted, but he was on (the UK) sex offenders’ list. In the United States, you’re on a sex offenders’ list for life. . . Why having Pete Townshend perform in what’s supposed to be a family show?"

Guns N'Roses speelt "My Generation"

Guns N’Roses speelt momenteel My Generation tijdens hun concerten. Hier is een versie te beluisteren, slechte kwaliteit, maar de enige die ik vinden kon.

"Floss" en Zak de ijskast in?

RockRadio bericht uit monde van Roger dat Pete de rockopera Floss even op een laag pitje heeft gezet en dat hij nu ‘losse’ nummers aan het schrijven is.

"Pete has shelved the rock opera for the moment. I think he’s got stuck somewhere in the narrative, he’s just writing regular songs now. To be honest, I don’t know much about Floss, though it sounds interesting. I don’t read his blogs, deliberately, and what I have with Pete is between me and him. I don’t really give a s*** what rumors might be flying about. But I always try to stay away from him during this part of the writing process. It’s best if I back off and just let his imagination run wild, because that’s where the good stuff comes from. And I’m hoping we"ll work a bit more as a band in the studio this time than on the last album — that was Pete playing in the studio and us just coming in at the end of it", aldus Roger in een reactie.

Pete gaf een reactie op de vraag of hij niet verbaasd is dat zijn nummers nog steeds gebruikt worden in o.a. films. "No,it doesn’t surprise me. I . . . y’know, what I can do now with goodgrace is accept that it was a good idea and that it was carried outbrilliantly by the people involved in it. And also responded to in amagnificent way by the people that got it, you know, and there arepeople now that are surfacing who claim to have got it that are reallyquite surprising, like Spike Lee. You know, when he talked to me aboutSummer Of Sam, you know, he talked a lot about, you know, how he wasgrabbed by the whole idea (of the Who) when he was a, you know, a youngkid, and you don’t expect that from kids that grow up in black NewYork. So, there are a whole number of people that have responded to theidea and have extrapolated something from it into their own world."

Zak schijnt momenteel niet bij de band betrokken te zijn. The Who maakt momenteel gebruik van drummer Mark Brzezicki. Brzezicki speelde eerder drums op Pete’s soloalbums.

Op AllMusic.com staat een korte recensie over de nieuwe Greatest Hits. De CD krijgt vier sterren.

Who-medley bij "The Sing Off"

The Sing Off is een programma op de Amerikaanse TV waar zanggroepen hun kunsten kunnen tonen. Onlangs liet de groep Beelzebub een Who-medley horen in het programma. De jury en het publiek waren er erg over te spreken. Klik hier om de medley te bekijken.

Vier nummers tijdens Superbowl?

Volgens de website van CBS4 zal The Who 4 nummers spelen tijdens de Superbowl. De maximale lengte van de Superbowl optredens is stipt 12 minuten.

"Niet iedereen blij met The Who op Superbowl"

The Examiner meldt dat niet iedereen zo blij is met het optreden van The Who tijdens de Superbowl. Volgens de schrijver van het artikel zou dat te maken hebben met de arrestatie van Pete in 2003. Enkele groepen zouden inmiddels naar de NFL en de gouverneur van Florida hebben geschreven met het verzoek om The Who te schrappen. Hier wordt geen gehoor aan gegeven.
